What is anarchism, can it work? Workshop/General Discussion 6pm

Anarchism is a political theory that advocates for the abolition of all systems of oppression and hierarchy (including the state, police and capitalism). It insists that organization of society should be in a voluntary and cooperative manner, instead of being based on competition and force.

Today, many believe that anarchism implies chaos and lawlessness. Others, who may agree with the main tenets of the theory, claim that it is impossible for humans to attain such a society.

However, there have been countless examples of anarchist societies dating back thousands of years. From the Mbuti tribes of central Africa to revolutionary Catalonia, human beings have continually shown that a better world is possible.

On February 22nd, we will have a workshop highlighting several historical instances of anarchism in practice, as well as the different “strains” of anarchism that have developed since its inception as a political and social movement. This will be followed by a general discussion on what anarchism means to us as individuals and anything else people may want to talk about.

Updated About: What is 38 blood alley?!?

38 Blood Alley is an anarchist social space located in Blood Alley on Occupied Coast Salish Territory (Vancouver).  Our goal is to enhance the anarchist struggle though events, discussions, critiques, literature, and fundraisers.  Anyone is welcome to attend our events but being an asshole or a cop is never welcomed. We are open during events and every Tuesday from 4pm-7pm.

For over a year now we have had dozens of events from movie nights to prisoner benefits to dance parties and reading discussions.  We encourage people to host events that would suit our space or to come check it out. Anyone can have an events as long as it falls around anarchist lines e.g does not promote dialogue and reform with the state. We are also always looking for more people to hang out and potentially join our collective.

Against The Drug War! Against The State!

screen_shot_2014-10-15_at_8.38.22_am

An Anarchist Perspective on Ayotzinapa and the Drug War in Mexico and a Discussion With the Author of the Book “Drug War Capitalism”

Part of the west coast tour presenting the new book. “Drug War Capitalism”

http://www.akpress.org/drug-war-capitalism.html

Book Description

Drug wars are good business.

Though pillage, profit, and plunder have been a mainstay of war since precolonial times, there is little contemporary focus on the role of finance and economics in today’s “Drug Wars”—despite the fact that they boost US banks and fill prisons with poor people. They feed political campaigns, increase the arms trade, and function as long-term fixes to capitalism’s woes, cracking open new territories to privatization and foreign direct investment.

Combining on-the-ground reporting with extensive research, Dawn Paley moves beyond the usual horror stories, beyond journalistic rubbernecking and hand-wringing, to follow the thread of the Drug War story throughout the entire region of Latin America and all the way back to US boardrooms and political offices. This unprecedented book chronicles how terror is used against the population at large in cities and rural areas, generating panic and facilitating policy changes that benefit the international private sector, particularly extractive industries like petroleum and mining. This is what is really going on. This is drug war capitalism.

Dawn Paley is a freelance journalist who has been reporting from South America, Central America, and Mexico for over ten years. Her writing has been published in the Nation, the Guardian, Vancouver Sun , Globe and Mail, Ms. Magazine, the Tyee, Georgia Straight, and NACLA, among others.
